Menengai makes two hookah charcoals: one from coconut shell and one from macadamia shell. Both come from Kenyan harvests, both are bound with tapioca starch, and both are pressed into the same 26 mm cube. The difference is in the shell, and you’ll notice it in the heat.

Choose coconut if…
- You want the flavour of your tobacco to lead, from the first draw to the last
- You smoke lighter, fruitier or more delicate blends
- You’re new to natural coals and want an easy, forgiving heat
Choose macadamia if…
- You pack big or dense bowls that need more heat to get going
- Your sessions run long and you want fewer coal changes
- You smoke outdoors where wind pulls heat away
Can you use both?
Yes. They’re the same size and light the same way, so you can mix them on one bowl. Some smokers start with coconut and swap in a macadamia cube when a bowl needs more heat later in the session.
What they have in common
Neither has chemical accelerants, so neither will light from a lighter. Both need a coil or gas burner. See how to light hookah charcoal for the method, and the hookah range or the shop for prices on boxes of 30 and 60.
