Stack
Pile the charcoal in a small heap in the grill, or fill a chimney starter.

Light
Light it with firelighters or paper. Never use petrol or paraffin.

Wait
After about 15–20 minutes the coals are covered in grey ash. Spread them out and start cooking.
Only burn charcoal outdoors or somewhere with plenty of fresh air. Never use a jiko or grill in a closed room: burning charcoal gives off carbon monoxide, which you cannot see or smell.
